Hitachi has announced new HDDs that are being added to its CinemaStar family. The new drives include 3.5-inch HDDs that use 500GB per platter technology and include the 1TB CinemaStar 7K1000.C and the 1TB CinemaStar 5K1000 CoolSpin drive.
Both of the drives are for use in video applications like DVRs and are intended for streaming video in HD formats with quiet operation and low temperatures. The 1TB drives can store nearly 250 hours of MPEG-4 video in HD resolution.
The new CoolSpin drive uses motor speed optimization to provide a unique balance of performance, power, and acoustics. The motor spins slower to reduce noise and power utilization making the drive produce only 2.4 bels during operation and consume only 3.3 watts or less at idle. Both of the drives will debut in Q4.
