ARM announced today that it has a new processor with dual-cores running at 2GHz called the Cortex-A9. The processor is built using the TSMC 40nm-G process and is optimized for speeds of 2GHz and higher. ARM also integrated low power consumption techniques to save power in devices using the new processor.

The A9 can operate at its peak performance while consuming under 250mw per CPU when selected from typical silicon. The processor also includes the CoreSight Program Trace Macrocell to let users see into the processors instruction flow.

The processor will be offered in a Coretex-A9 power-optimized hard macro and a Cortex-A9 MPCore hard macro. “The Cortex-A9 MPCore processor has already been widely accepted as the processor of choice for high-performance embedded applications across a broad spectrum of demanding consumer and enterprise devices,” said Eric Schorn, VP marketing, Processor Division, ARM. “ARM’s parallel development of advanced, optimized physical IP components demonstrates a new level of collaborative differentiation while enabling our Partners to expand their penetration into high margin domains traditionally occupied by proprietary architectures.”
