Reading press releases for a living tends to jade one to enthusiastic rhetoric. Pretty much every product ever released claims to be revolutionary or exceptional in some way. That's why it can be so hard to spot something truly ground-breaking from reading the press release alone. Take this new Laser-Accurate Microphone, being debuted this week at the AES Convention in New York.

Instead of using a diaphragm like a conventional microphone, Laser-Accurate technology uses a chamber of particles suspended in air. When the air pressure changes, a laser measures the movements of the suspended particles. This, Schwartz Engineering claims, allows their mic to capture pure sound, unchanged by the artificial motion of the diaphragm and other issues traditional microphones suffer from.

This sounds pretty amazing. Better microphones that can pick up closer to pure sound can't help but be a boon to audiophiles everywhere. I'm not sure if Laser-Accurate microphones are going to revolutionize the industry or change recording as we know it, but they certainly sound nifty. Any product that uses lasers is bound to get cred with techno-geeks.
