The 'vaporware' smartphone of the last year-and-change could be heading to a store near you within the next week. The Garmin-Asus nuvifone will be coming to AT&T on October 4th, according to anonymous tips sent to Engadget. Since the tips were backed up with screenshots of the product in the AT&T internal inventory and information for salesmen I think they qualify as 'trustworthy'.
While the nuvifone is still a fairly solid smartphone it's definitely been eclipsed by more recently developed mobiles. It's going to be difficult to sell the $300 (after a $100 MIB) nuvifone to customers when the iPhone 3GS is also an option. The Garmin-Asus will have a sweet GPS, but I'm not sure how far that's going to take it with budget-hungry consumers.
On the other hand, buying the Garmin-Asus for $300 is still cheaper than buying the iPhone 3GS and the TomTom service/driving kit. If you look at things that way, the nuvifone becomes a much better buy. Anyone out there interested? If so, let us know in the comments.
