Mobile Phones

TerreStar makes a satellite phone that is small and looks like most other features phones rather than a suitcase device that looks like it is from the 1990's. TerreStar has announced that AT&T will be distributing its Genus smartphone and the device will run on an all-IP satellite network and use AT&T service when available.

The Genus handset is able to combine 3G normal cellular communications networks when available with satellite coverage to make and receive calls when the terrestrial network is not available. The handset features Windows Mobile OS, uses a touchscreen, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, and has a QWERTY keyboard.

The Genus phone is aimed at those who spend lots of time in very rural areas where there is no mobile service, government, emergency responders, and enterprise users. The Genus smartphone will be demonstrated at a special event on October 5 in Colorado.
