Nintendo announced their half year earnings and the profit for the April to September period is down 52% compared to last year according to the WSJ. Nintendo also lowered the forecast for the full fiscal year to 230 billion Yen profit compared to 300 billion yen forecasted earlier.
Nintendo blames the strong yen and the recent Wii price-cut for the drop in profit. Though Nintendo also sold way less Wii consoles compared to last year.
In the reporting period Nintendo sold 5.75m Wii consoles world-wide compared to 10m last year.
Is the Wii hype over? Or will the Wii pick up steam again during the Holiday shopping season? Now that the Wii is only $199.99, Nintendo could attract a new segment of consumers that still do not own a Wii. At that price the Wii could also, like many already have, become the 2nd console in the house next to a PS3 or Xbox 360.
Releasing the Black Wii in the U.S., would also help sales.
Full details on the reported Nintendo numbers can be found in this pdf. Via the WSJ.
