The Motorola Droid is no iPhone killer, but that doesn't mean it hasn't already been a massive success. Initial estimates of first-weekend sales were around 100,000 and that total is believed to have almost tripled in the ensuing week. WHERE (via BGR) has registered around 25,000 Droid handsets now active on their tracking system. Since WHERE's penetration is around 10%, this means around 250,000 Droid smartphones.
That may not seem too impressive when compared to the million+ opening weekend sales common to the iPhone. For a normal smartphone, a quarter-of-a-million sales in this span of time is excellent. Moto's handset isn't going to topple the status quo, but it might be enough to keep the ailing manufacturer alive and solvent. Let's take the Droid for what it is; a step forward. It's the first Android smartphone with enough power to measure up to the iPhone. While most reviewers agree that the Droid isn't quite playing on the iPhone's level, the consensus seems to be that it is very close. The iPhone won't be alone at the top for long, other developers are starting to catch on.Posted on Sat, 14 Nov 2009 17:42:26 CST | by Robert Evans
