At this years CES 2005 several TV vendors announced 1080p HDTVs and it was not quite clear why consumers should be looking forward to them.
1080p (progressive scanning) compared to the currently common 1080i (interlaced scanning) provides a sharper picture because it draws all lines one after the other for a single frame (60 frames per second). 1080i is alternating every other line per frame (30 frames per second). Back at CES
2005 there was no source that actually provides 1080p, up-sampling possibilities
and resulting higher quality picture have been circulated as the only benefit for 1080p HDTVs. Now there is a
1080p source coming, it is called
Sony Playstation 3.
1080p HDTVs are still pretty high priced. There are for instance 1080p DLP HDTVs like the Samsung HL-R5688W 56 inch 1080p HDTV (shown in picture). It is supposed to ship this month. Amazon.com has already listed it and there are two stores
I found offering it right now. The lowest price is at $5,931.51.
Amazon.com also lists the
61" Samsung HL-R6178W DLP monster HDTV. No pricing yet on that one available.
Starting at $4,499.00 the Sharp Aquos LC-45GD4U 45" LCD HDTV also supports 1080p. The sister model LC-45GD6U is also 1080p, only difference between those two LCD HDTVs is speaker placement.
Best
Buy has a cheaper alternative with the 1080p 37" LCD TV from Westinghouse.
It is HD-Ready and does 1080p and sells for $2,184.99.
Fujitsu
announced in 2004 a projector with 1080p capability dubbed LPF-711, but I
could not find it on sale yet. The price is also way beyond with over $20,000.
If you know an interesting 1080p capable TV please
email us.
