The Sony PSP, introduced during a press conference in advance of the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) trade show 2003, is slated to go beyond what the Nintendo Game Boy Advance can do today. Sony calls it, the ‘Walkman’ of the 21st century.
The PSP will have a screen capable of showing 3D images, stereo sound, USB 2.0 connectivity and a custom processor built on cutting-edge 90-nanometer chipmaking technology.
“PSP” will be equipped with a wide screen 480 x 272 pixel (16 by 9) TFT LCD
monitor with a backlight, and powered by super chipsets utilizing the latest 90 nm
semiconductor technology. For graphics, 3D rendering will be enhanced by the employment
of curved surfaces (NURBS) along with conventional polygons. Video quality will also be
enhanced with MPEG4, which delivers quality equivalent to DVD video at a low data rate.
The device will also use a new media format. The UMD disc is an optical disc about half the size of a DVD or CD and capable of holding 1.8GB of data.
