No More RIO MP3 Players
Topic: Portable Devices

D&M Holdings Inc. today announced it would exit the mass-market portable digital audio player
business, currently marketed under the Rio brand, by September 30, 2005.
D&M Holdings Inc. already sold the MP3 player technology in July to SigmaTel, Inc.
The company thinks that the portable media player business is not a strong enough strategic fit for D&M Holdings. They will focus on core Premium AV
business and advanced content server products.
D&M Holdings Inc. is also in the process of acquiring Boston Acoustics, Inc.
So I assume Rio MP3 players should be available at bargain prices soon. The Rio Carbon 6GB player for instance is still a nice device (photo).
D&M Holdings Inc. is based in Tokyo and owns the Denon, Marantz, McIntosh
Laboratory, D&M Professional, ReplayTV(R), Rio(R) and Escient(R) brands.
More details in this press-release.
