Update:
Official DARPA Grand Challenge 2005 Winner Announced
The official winner of the DARPA Grand Challenge 2005 is not yet announced, but it looks like the Stanford University Racing Team with the Volkswagen Touareg Stanley has won.
The amazing thing is that four autonomous vehicles have finished the 132 miles desert course. What a contrast to last year's Grand Challenge, where no robot car came close to finish the course.
The status board on the Grand Challenge 2005 site says that the Stanford Stanley vehicle finished the course in 9 hours and 55 min. Second is the Carnegie Mellon University's Red Team (Hummer) with only 4 minutes distance. Red Team Too is on 3rd place.
Update:
The times posted on the status board are wrong. I4U reader Stacy tells me that the winning time
was 7 hours and 30 min. The DARPA site did not stop the times for some reason. Also the robot cars have been stopped during the races for either security or other reasons. Now the organizers have to analyse the logs to determine who actually won.
Looks like I won my bet from yesterday, or maybe not.
One lonely robot car (Team TerraMax) is still on the course apparently.
The winning robot car has completed the course with an average of 17mph. This is quite astonishing. I mean we are talking off-road and no human drivers.
Looks like DARPA is also very happy about the results. Here is their press-release (pdf), about the robot cars conquering the DARPA Grand Challenge 2005.
