Reporter Jason Green:
Thomson is getting out of the consumer electronics business and focus on services and products for the media industry.
French Thomson seeks partners to take for their business units in their Connectivity by Thomson unit, which includes audio and video products. What those partnerships will mean is unclear. Reason for this strategy change is the competition from Apple and Asian electronics companies.
Thomson sells consumer electronics in the US under the RCA brand. Will see if this old brand will stay or go away. Thomson RCA had a good portable video player (RCA Lyra RD2780), when those first appeared, but they did not continue to bring new products in that segment and lost touch with the competition.
In an investor meeting tomorrow, the Thomson management will reveal more details on the new strategy. More details in this press-release (Thanks Larry R.).
