Pioneer announced today that it will introduce their first Blu-ray Writer BDR-101A for PCs at the CES 2006.
The Pioneer Blu-ray burner BDR-101A connects via ATAPI.
Pioneer says to actually start shipping this Blu-ray drive still in January 2006. The BDR-101A supports BD-R (Blu-ray Disc Recordable) and BD-RE (Blu-ray Disc Rewritable) Blu-ray discs with 25GB capacity. Data transfer speeds achievable with the Pioneer drive are 72mbps.
The Pioneer BDR-101A is still supporting DVD burning. No pricing available yet.
First reports of the Pioneer BDR-101A appeared already in August. More details on AkihabaraNews and on the Pioneer press-release (Japanese).
Let's see how the Blu-ray versus HD DVD battle plays out at this years CES. Last year at the CES 2005 the next generation DVD format war was still a bit subdued.
