Apple's iPod has inspired everything from a sock-designed carrier to high-end iPod-compatible furniture. So it should come as no surprise that Nike recently entered the fray with the announcement of their "Nike+" footwear, a line of shoes that will be manufactured specifically for functionality with the iPod nano. Based on the information in their press release, it seems other iPod models will not be compatible.

Via a special sensor in the shoe, your iPod will also calculate detailed information about your workout, such as your average pace, distance traveled, and calories burned.

You will then be able to link your iPod to your iTunes software, where it will sync your data with Nikeplus.com, allowing you to have a permanent log of your workout information. Nike has also announced that they will be providing special content through the "Nike Sport Music" section of iTunes, including exclusive podcasts, and music tracks mixed with voiceover coaching. Just so the rest of your body doesn't get jealous, Nike will also be releasing shirts, shorts, armbands, and jackets, all designed to complement the Nike+ product line. The first Nike+ compatible shoe will be the Air Zoom Moire, which will be available in July at a suggested retail price of $100. To get the full experience, you will also need the wireless Nike+iPod Sport Kit, which will also be out within the next 60 days, and will sell for $29.

Personally, I think this is an ingenious move. I see joggers running all the time listening to music with their iPods attached uncomfortably to their shorts or wristband. This partnership between two such abnormally strong leaders in their respective markets can only be a good move for everyone involved.
