Recently, at the WinHEC Windows Engineering Conference in Seattle, Lexar announced that they are developing a secure USB Flash Drive. It will allow for protection against unwanted use of or access to the flash drive, by only displaying the contents when it is put into an authorized computer.

This technology is possible with the upcoming Windows Vista's proprietary BitLocker encryption feature. It will most definitely be the most secure way to store files on a portable flash drive. "We are pleased to be working with Lexar in the development of enhanced security for USB devices," says Robert Wise, VP of marketing for partner company Phoenix Technologies. "The combination of Lexar's unique USB storage capabilities with Phoenix competencies in endpoint security and pre-boot authentication will bring best-of-breed solutions to our mutual enterprise customers."

No pricing or release date information was released for Lexmark's secure USB flash drives, but considering it is designed to function specifically with Windows Vista, don't count on seeing it anytime soon. More info on BitLocker technology at Microsoft.com.
