I don't have the best memory in the world, but I remember thinking that commercially available blank DVDs came out at least a year after the launch of the first DVD player (which seems like millenia ago now). Apparently Hitachi and Mitsubishi don't want such a long delay in the world of HD DVD.
Even though no stand-alone HD DVD recorder hardware has been officially announced yet, the two Japanese companies have announced that they will be releasing HD DVD-R and HD DVD-R DL discs later this year, though obviously we can expect HD DVD recorders probably within the next few months.
This is just great. I recently finally got myself a DVD recorder and now I have to start worrying about an HD DVD counterpart. I think I'll be like many others and see how Blu-Ray and HD DVD fare for a little while first.
