Google launched their Picasa photo editing software a good while ago, but today they unveiled a brand new service with the Picasa name -- Picasa Web Albums (link).
With sites like Photobucket and Flickr gaining monstrous popularity, you knew it was only a matter of time before Google tried to get in on the action. Picasa Web Album lets you create multiple albums of photos, each with captions, just like Flickr. You are also able to add other users' Web Albums to your "favorites".
With Google Web Albums, you receive 250 MB of free storage, and you can purchase an additional 6 GB for $25.00 per year. You can sign up on a first-come first-served basis at Picasa Web's site.
Could this be the Flickr killer? Well, killing Flickr would not be a monumental defeat because it has not grown to epic porportions quite yet. I think Google entered this market at just the right time. The Google/Picasa name alone will make Google Web Albums a force to be reckoned with.
