In just a few days, the next generation home video battle will be officially under way, when Samsung launches its BD-P1000 Blu-Ray player. Of course, the competing HD DVD format has been in the market since the first player was released in March.

Samsung announced yesterday that they are considering making a player that will play both formats. In fact, according to Samsung's Kim Du-Hyon, the company does not have plans "to make an HD DVD-only player but are considering a universal player", so if you're a Samsung freak and want to watch HD DVDs, you may need to buy a BR/HDD dual player.
Du-Hyon also said that if they do decide to make a universal player, it will be out either by the end of this year or in early 2007. He didn't touch on pricing possibility, but you can imagine, with BR players costing around $1,000 and HD DVD around $500, it will likely be an expensive device.
