India's Very Basic ''Mini Mobile'' Phone

The National Institute of Design in India has come out with what is probably the most basic cell phone ever. There's a total of 5 buttons -- one to connect, one to disconnect, and three pre-programmed numbers. There is no display. There isn't even a SIM card slot. The phone must be programmed and serviced via a connection with another cell phone.

This kind of phone would be ideal for young children as a simple way for communication between them and their parents, or for senior citizens who have a tough time getting acquainted with more busy cell phones. We couldn't find any pricing details on this phone, and there's no word on if it'll reach any outside markets. I think it may be a little too simplistic to have any profitability in more developed countries.

Video of a report from CNN IBN about the Mini Mobile is at YouTube. Via New Launches.
