Ricoh could have invented the component that ends the HD format war before it began.
Ricoh developed a diffraction plate that allows a single optical pickup and lens read Blu-ray, HD DVD, DVD and CD.
There is no information yet on how expensive the component is. It sounds like a cool and simple solution to the multi-format problem that should enable player manufactures to build affordable HD players.
Ricoh will show the multi-format optical device next week at the Optoelectronics Exhibition 2006 in Japan. The product is available to OEM manufacturers by the end of the year.
