Some breaking news here about Samsung. According to a statement last night, their flagship Blu-ray Disc player, the BD-P1000, which remains the only consumer BD player on the market, has some minor problems with it, which won't be able to be fixed until September.
There's an incorrect setting in the noise reduction chip, which has caused softness in video playback in a good chunk of the retail units. Samsung found this out when a number of reviewers complained about the problems that it caused. There's no way (at least no user-friendly one) for an individual to get to this chip, meaning those people who were early to embrace BD will be stuck with this problem for a couple months.
You may as well just break out the old DVD player for the rest of the summer, since this defect has made the BD quality about the same as DVDs.
The firmware update will be released in the form of a download that you can burn to a CD, then pop into your BD player to fix the error. It wouldn't be a brand new hardware launch if there weren't wide-spread problems. That's what you get for being an early adopter.
