Writing on Water - The Next Big 'Wave'?

Yeah... I apologize for the horrible pun in the title. Anyway, there's a new technology that's being tried out in Japan that deals with being able to write messages in water. An example is seen in the picture, with the letter 'S' being displayed. Essentially what is done is to turn a contained area of water into a template of hydrolic "pixels", which can be manipulated via wave generators.
Obviously water is a tricky substance, so the set-up has to be executed perfectly. Early versions of the technology took upwards of half an hour to correctly display a letter, though that's now been scaled down to a matter of seconds for certain letters (e.g. Ks and Ls).
Yep; this is just one of those crazy technology creations that has absolutely no viable commercial value but is still cool to see. Personally I prefer the Biblical novelty of walking on water over this concept, though anything that manipulates water is cool in my book.
