It's an issue we've been wondering about for a while. From all the up-close experience we've had with the PlayStation 3, we'd never seen a place where you could plug in a PlayStation or PlayStation 2 memory card, leading us to wonder exactly how you'd get to your data for older PlayStation games.

That question has now been answered, and the source is none other than the official PS3 website. It seems you will be able to just dump your PS2 save data on to the PS3, via a "virtual memory card" built into the system. Of course, this will require a special piece of hardware. From the site: "To use saved data on a PlayStation 2 memory card, you must copy the data onto a virtual memory card within the hard disk. This requires a PS2/PSone memory card adaptor to copy the data to your PLAYSTATION 3. A memory card adaptor is designed to edit, up/download game saves to and from EMS flash card or smart media card."

Now, we don't know if this special "adaptor" will come packaged with the system, or if Sony will nickel and dime us even after we plop down $600 for a PS3 and charge us for the adapter on the side.
