Call this a completely new way to market an upcoming system. Nintendo is reportedly working on a Ninteno DS game that, when completed, will tell you when the Nintendo Wii will be released. I4U has not been able to confirm this first-hand, but it's one of those things that's so obscure it would have been difficult for someone to make up. Update: Well we learned that the story is fabricated; still it is a fun idea.

According to the game rag, an "unnamed Nintendo spokesperson" confirmed the game, saying, "Using the touch screen, you'll be able to shuffle through over 10,000 forum posts worth of conspiracy theories, as well as over 100,000 sudoku games. Each completed task brings you one step closer to solving the mystery of the Nintendo Wii launch date. Oh, and it has Pokemon in it." The spokesperson also allegedly said, "It has sudoku for older audiences, and Pokemon for younger audiences, and it's a mystery which appeals to the ever elusive female demographic. Women like to solve mysteries. They also like to write murders." The only thing that bothers me about this is the last sentence. Women don't write murders. Maybe they write murder mysteries, or like to solve them, but that's an awfully strange way for a professional spokesperson to word a statement.

Anyway, take it for what it's worth. It'd be a brilliant strategy from Nintendo since the Wii release mystery is on the top of the minds of virtually every gamer. Also, apparently the DS game has a release date of September 18. If this whole thing is true, it would have to mean that we wouldn't get an announcement at the Leipzig Games Convention, where Nintendo is supposed to have a strong Wii presence.
