AOL is not getting off easy from their mishap of releasing search log data of 658,000 AOL subscribers. The press has a field day with this. We reported already about AOL users getting identified through what they have searched for.
PCMag titles their latest story: AOL's Duh-oh! Moment.
Quote: "AOL has broken a public Internet trust, and I wonder if there's any way to get it back. After spending years telling users that it collects demographically based information for, well, demographic purposes, a handful of nabobs inside the AOL sanctuary decided to turn a horizontal profile of information from millions of users into a vertical one that suddenly sees AOL-ers as unique. "
The NY Times has a new story up titled: Your Life as an Open Book.
Quote: "So, as one privacy group has asserted, is AOL’s blunder likely to be the search industry’s “Data Valdez,” (very funny!) like the 1989 Exxon oil spill that became the rallying cry for the environmental movement?"
Wired News has a good FAQ on the issue.
Google says it won't pull an AOL.
