Sony Clarifies PS3 Shortage Comments

Last week, in an interview with GameSpot, Kaz said that there would be a shortage of PS3 consoles between the launch and the year's end, and that apparently only 2 million units would be shipped by the end of the year, leading many to think that Xbox 360-esque shortage problem would plague Sony. However, Sony is now "claifying" what Kaz said, and saying that there should be sufficient supply by the end of the year.

"Unfortunately Kaz Hirai's comments in the recent GameSpot interview regarding PlayStation 3 production were misunderstood. We are still on schedule to ship 2 million units for our mid-November 2006 launch and additional 2 million units by the end of the year for a total of 4 million units," Sony said in a statement. Still in question is whether or not production of the PlayStation 3 has actually begun. There are conflicting reports, the most recent of which is that final retail units have yet to be put on the assembly line. The Nintendo Wii has been assumed to have been in production already for quite some time.
