While it's not nearly the same bombshell that hit Europe this morning, Japan and the U.S. will also feel the effects of the production issues regarding the PlayStation 3. Sony is now officially reneging on their 2 million unit promise for launch, and will launch with only 500,000 PS3s. Ironically, Kaz said this would be a possibility not too long ago, but the PlayStation PR nazis quickly said that this was not going to happen. Now there's egg on everyone's face.

Of course, Europe is getting the real shaft from this development, with absolutely no PS3s heading there for the rest of the year. The U.S. is going to be the major player at launch, with 400,000 units now allocated there. Japan will have an almost non-existant 100,000 unit launch. What does that average out to? One PS3 for every two stores?
Sony has also cut their year-end promise of 4 million PS3 consoles back down to 2 million. This is an enormously huge downfall for Sony, since they will effectively miss the opportunity for widespread holiday shopping availability. The Wii on the other hand has yet to report any production issues, and looks like, in terms of total sales, will win the Christmas purchasing game. More Sony PS3 News
