TiVo Series 3 To Allow For Lifetime Subscription Transfers, But It'll Cost 'Ya

TiVo Series 3 DVRs, which we were able to get some early dish on in the middle of the year, are mainly focused on the HD crowd. They'll be the first TiVo units that will be able to record in high definition quality. It would be no surprise to me if most of the early adopters for this high-end DVR are the same ones who had to get their hands on the original TiVos.

I guess that's why TiVo has decided to allow people to transfer their lifetime subscriptions, which is no longer an option for new customers, to the new line of TiVos. However, they can't just let them do it for free. Lifetime subscribers will need to pay $199 to transfer their service, and they can only do it if the Series 3 recorder is purchased by the end of the year. We still don't know when they will be released, but I guess this means they will in fact come out within the next couple of months.
A lot of people thought that those with lifetime subscriptions would be stuck with only one recorder, which became a real concern with TiVo owners when Series 3 was announced. So to be able to transfer the lifetime service agreement, even if it is just about as much as the original subscription amount, is still a relief to that group of TiVo addicts who are HD fanatics.
