Folding@Home has been around for a long while now and is a software application that you download to your computer that allows you to donate your unused computer time to fantastically worthy causes like the search for cures to diseases like Alzheimer’s. Folding@Home has become very popular and several large websites support teams of folders.
To date all the donated computer time has centered on the CPU. However, in the newest beta version of the Folding@Home software you can now utilize processor time from ATI GPUs from the newest X1950 to the X1900 and X1800 GPUs.
You might wonder how much performance they could be wringing out of your GPU, and you will be surprised to hear the improvements in performance expected by utilizing ATI brand GPUs. How about in the neighborhood of a ~20x to 500x improvement! And that number is utilizing a single graphics card, support for CrossFire multiple cards is coming too.
