Yes you read that headline correctly. Wicked Lasers did the unthinkable. They took the sparse blue laser diodes used in Blu-ray Disc drives and made a cool Laser gadget out of it called Sonar.

Sony had to delay the European launch of the Sony PS3 because of the low availability of Blue laser diodes.
So how is Wicked Lasers able to build a laser gadget featuring a 405nm Blu-ray laser diode?
They buy Blu-ray disc players like the one from Samsung and take out the laser diode and throw away the rest. Sony, why did you not do that to save the Sony PS3 launch?

The Sonar Blu-ray laser is made from spacecraft grade 6061-T6 aluminum casing and features super-regulated beam stability and 20mW power. It is powered by a 3V CR123A lithium battery.

In case you are wondering why the Sonar laser costs 2 grand. I was wondering too and asked Wicked Lasers this question and the answer is: "The cost of the Sonar is mainly due to the high price of laser diodes which are taken from Blu-ray disc players. The cost of a new Blu-ray disc player combined with international shipping, and import taxes raises the cost of obtaining a 405nm diode in China to approximately $1,500."
