Apparently there are enough reports of issues of the Sony PS3 not playing nice with HDTV sets that Sony made a statement to fix the issues.
The explanation is that some older HDTV sets do not support 720p resolution. They only would do 1080i. The PS3 only does 720p and 1080p.
Sony promises a solution in this statement on GameDaily Biz. Sony would need to make the PS3 output at 1080i to make things work I guess. I am not sure if they would be able to do this via a firmware update.
Maybe if you have this issue go and get yourself a new 1080p HDTV.
