Betterhuman.com has an interesting article on the advances in using Virtual Reality in treating Arachnophobia - the fear of spiders.
Treating phobias requires eliciting anxiety through exposure to a fear-inducing stimulus. Virtual reality therapy offers advantages in terms of control, confidentiality and the ability to mimic prohibitive stimuli such as height. The HITLab at the University of Washington could improve the results by combining tactile feedback with VR.
