Taiwanese Computer manufacturer Acer is already offering PDAs and now plans to enter the smartphone business in 2007.
In and interview with German newspaper Sueddeutsche Zeitung, via Heise, Gianfranco Lanci President of Acer says that the Acer Smartphone in the works is comparable to a RIM Blackberry focusing on Email functionality.
It is a natural step that many PDA manufacturers already have taken to enter the smartphone business. Acer is just another one in the highly competitive business smartphone market. Acer has some good momentum (fastest growing PC manufacturer 2006 based on IDC) and money in the bank for acquisitions.
Acer expects the new smartphone to be launched in 3 to 6 month.
