Intel is making some information about the upcoming Penryn family of CPUs known. Intel says to expect performance increases of about 15% for image related applications, 25% for 3D rendering, more than 40% increase in video encoding speed and a whopping 40% increase in gaming performance from Penryn.
These indicators are based on a pre-production 45nm Hi-k Intel quad core processor running 3.33 GHz with a 1333MHz FSB vs. the beastly Intel QX6800 Extreme Core 2 Processor introduced last week running at 2.93 GHz with a 1066MHz FSB. Intel says you can expect about a 45% increase in performance for bandwidth intensive applications and a 25% increase for servers running Java. An interesting little tidbit thrown in at the end of the press release talking about the new Penryn CPUs mentions a new high-end enthusiast and gaming platform code names “Skulltrail.”
