The NewScientist reports that magnets could make your mind grwo stronger.
Stimulating the brain in mice with a magnetic coil appears to promote the growth of new neurons in areas associated with learning and memory.
Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) has been used experimentally to treat a range of brain disorders, including depression and schizophrenia, and to rehabilitate people after a stroke.
John Rothwell, a TMS researcher at the Institute of Neurology at University College London, says this is the first time TMS has been shown to enhance neurogenesis, but he questions whether TMS could stimulate neuron growth elsewhere in the brain.
