PQI has announced a whopping 256GB SSD based on a 2.5” form factor using a SATA interface. The SSD is said to transfer data at a mere 60 mb/s, but hopefully the lower seek times and power requirements will make up for that.
There is no official price released for the drive at this time, but if you consider that the PQI 32GB SSD goes for a price of $1500, you can get an idea of the cost likely associated with the 256GB version.
Personally, I don’t see any way SSD drives are really going to catch hold till prices come down to the sub $1000 range for larger storage capacities. I don’t know anyone willing to pay $1500 for 32Gb SSD that’s slower than a normal HDD. You could get about 3 of the Hitachi 1TB drives for the same price. Via Ohgizmo!
