Earlier this week I posted the news that PNY was getting into the DDR3 business in a big way and will be announcing their SSD line at Computex this month. Today a very reputable source came by with some numbers & information for us concerning the PNY SSD drives being announced.
PNY will have a 32GB SSD drive that will go for about $350 in volume with SATA or PATA interfaces. The 32GB drive will have sustained read speeds of around 50 Mbps, sustained write speeds of around 30 Mbps, and utilize a 2.5” form factor. This drive should be available shortly after its official launch at Computex.
Coming early in Q3 of this year PNY will be rolling out a second-generation SSD drive in a 128GB capacity. The coolest news on this 2nd generation drive is that read speeds are expected to be anywhere from 33% to 80% faster than the first generation 32GB SSD. Pricing on the 128GB drive is expected to be somewhere in the mid-$1000 range and the drive will utilize SATA or PATA interfaces and carry the 2.5” form factor.
PNY is also said to be readying a 1.8”, 64GB SSD that uses a ZIF connector as a drop-in replacement drive for gadgets like the iPod and Zune or UMPCs such as the OQO and Samsung Q1 Ultra. PNY is also looking to be the first to market with a 1.8” SSD utilizing new technology, promising a small footprint with performance on par with larger SATA SSD drives. It looks like PNY is taking the SSD business very seriously and it is fantastic to see more competition in the SSD marketplace.
