Joe Girardi is still not quite sure what blocking the catcher entails.Credit: Getty Images One of the new additions to rules this season is that catchers are not allowed to block home plate without possession of the ball. Though he successfully won a challenge on a play at first base in Sunday’s 3-2 win over the Red Sox, Girardi was not successful at contesting a play in which he thought Toronto catcher Josh Thole was in violation of th ...

Making certain plays more complicated or telling fans that what they think is an out — and has always been an out for as long as we’ve watched the game — probably isn’t what MLB had in mind when implementing a wider version of instant replay this year. Yet two weeks into the 2014 season, the “transfer rule” is becoming increasingly problematic for players and managers. The latest example was seen during Monday’s Mariners-Rangers game in Arlington. The amendment, unanimously approved by league owners during this past offseason’s winter meetings, allows for managers to “challenge” up to two calls per game — one if they get the first challenge wrong, two if they get it right.
