A bigger and brighter full moon will light up the Toronto sky on Saturday night — one of three such “supermoons” appearing this year.
According to NASA, the full moons on Aug. 10 and Sept. 9 will also look 14 per cent bigger and 30 per cent brighter as the moon passes 50,000 kilometres closer to earth.
The scientific term for the phenomenon is “perigee moon” — referring to the point in the moon’s elliptical orbit closest to earth.

It's that time of the lunar calendar where we approach full moon status. The moon will be full tomorrow morning at 7:25am. But even tonight, expect a 14% bigger and 30% brighter full moon than full moons of 2013. The reason?
The moon is in perigee. The terms perigee and apogee refer to the distance of the moon from the earth. During perigee the moon is closest to Earth. The opposite is true when the moon is at apogee.
