Navy Debuts New Railgun That Launches Shells at Mach 7

Source: Slashdot

Jeremiah Cornelius writes: "The U.S. Navy's new railgun technology, developed by General Atomics, uses the Lorentz force in a type of linear, electric motor to hurl a 23-pound projectile at speeds exceeding Mach 7 — in excess of 5,000 mph. The weapon has a range of 100 miles and doesn't require explosive warheads. 'The electromagnetic railgun represents an incredible new offensive capability for the U.S. Navy,' says Rear Adm. Bryant Fuller, the Navy's ...

Bundeswehr Holds Alpine Adventure Camp 2014
The rail gun, often likened to something out of “Star Wars,” uses electromagnetic energy to fire 23-pound projectiles up to seven times the speed of sound and over 100 miles. While testing has so far taken place solely on land, the Rear Admiral Matt Klunder of the Naval Research team said that in two years the weapon would be placed on the high-speed USNS Millinocket for sea trials. "It's now reality and it's not s ...

Video: Watch the Navy’s futuristic railgun blow stuff up

Source: BGR

The United States Navy is set to deploy its electromagnetic railgun on one of its joint high-speed vessels (JHSV) in 2016. According to the Navy, the weapon uses “an electromagnetic force - known as the Lorenz Force - to rapidly accelerate and launch a projectile between two conductive rails.” The railgun will be able to fire projectiles at a much higher velocity than current weaponry, obviously allowing them to travel much greater distances.
