OCZ is certainly best known as a maker of some fantastic gaming RAM and of late they have been branching out into some new space for the company. OCZ is making fantastic power supplies and RAM which they have done for a long time now. New additions to their product line include flash drives, video cads and now gaming mice with their new OCZ Equalizer.

The big news with the OCZ Equalizer is that the mouse can go up to 2500dpi sensitivity without software interpolation. In fact you don’t even need drivers to get to that resolution you can walk right up to any PC, plug the OCZ Equalizer in and get your 2500 dpi resolution. To my knowledge the OCZ Equalizer is the only gaming mouse on the market that can hit 2500 dpi without resorting to software, the other top gaming mice only go to 2000 dpi. To change the sensitivity on-the-fly you hit a small button right behind the scroll wheel and the scroll wheel glows different colors to let you know what sensitivity the mouse is at.

OCZ also gave the Equalizer lots of buttons that you can map to any keyboard command via their Equalware software. This is a very important feature that comes in very handy when you can’t map the controls you want to the mouse buttons you would like to use in game. With the software you can map any keyboard command to whatever mouse button you desire.

To the left of the scroll wheel the OCZ Equalizer has an orange button called the “Triple Threat” button which allows you to fire three times with one button click. You can also use the button to accomplish any computing task that requires a double click with a single mouse click. On the left side of the mouse are buttons that map to forward and back for normal PC use. During gaming you can map other commands to it in the games controls setting menu or via the Equalware software.

OCZ used a small and thin cable on the Equalizer that helps ensure the cable doesn’t snag or hang on items on your desk. Where your thumb lies on the right side of the mouse is a textured rubberized thump pad to improve grip.

Gaming & Use
In use the OCZ Equalizer is a fantastic gaming mouse and easily one of the best mice around. The high 2500 dpi sensitivity is fantastic in games where quick movements are required. I found 2500 dpi performed exceptionally well in Battlefield 2142 when I drive tanks. I even found that I liked playing at that dpi setting while sniping sans vehicle because it allowed me to move quickly to keep fast moving enemies in my crosshairs. That is something you might as well give up on with low sensitivity settings.

The Triple threat button is cool and allows you to fire repeatedly with one button press. However, it doesn’t make lots of sense to use it on automatic weapons. Single shot sniping is really where the Triple Threat button shines. The only real issue I had with the OCZ Equalizer was with the method OCZ uses to show you what sensitivity setting you are on. The scroll wheel changes colors for each sensitivity setting and when you get to 2000 dpi and 2500 dpi it alternates between two colors. The problem is that I was never sure what sensitivity setting it was on without looking at the manual. Sure you will learn the color scheme over time and this will be a non-issue. I would have preferred a simple sliding scale like Logitech uses to show the sensitivity setting.

The feel of the desktop model in my medium sized hands is perfect and I also really find the blue color appealing. You can get a smaller mobile version to take on the road or for those simply liking a smaller mouse. Equalware is easy to use and gives you great control over the mouse. While the design is intended for right handed users, you can change the buttons in the software for a left hand user.
