Topic:

3GSM is now Mobile World Congress Technology News, Electronics Buy Guide and Gadget Review The GSMA is rebranding the 3GSM World Congress and its sister event in Asia to Mobile World Congress and Mobile Asia Congress respectively.

Apparently the GSMA wants to broaden the appeal of the show to other industries with the rebranding.
It is not the name of the show that counts, its the attending companies and if the show is seen as a forum to make deals and launch new products. Read more

3GSM 2007 Highlights and a Disappointment

Topic:

3GSM 2007 Highlights and a Disappointment Technology News, Electronics Buy Guide and Gadget Review Yesterday the mobile phone companies tried to top each other with the number of announcements of new mobile devices for the start of the 3GSM 2007 Conference in Barcelona.

The biggest trends is sure HSDPA. A new 3G phone needs to have HSDPA, there is no way around it. It is great that the handset guys already offer HSDPA, where most 3G users are still putting out the champagne to celebrate a decent 3G connection whenever they encounter one. Still if you want a somewhat future proof phone, HSDPA is a must.

In context of this comes actually my biggest disappointment of the 3GSM so far. The new Neonode N2 is not 3G. It also does not have Wi-fi. For Europe this is a no-go for me. Neonode tried to tease us hard, but the new Neonode is not by far as innovative as their first Neonode N1 was back in 2002/2004. Are they now closer to the market with the N2? Sure the Apple iPhone is also just GSM, but Apple can also forget to show up with a GSM iPhone in Europe. For the US this is ok to boot, but a 3G iPhone needs to come soon there too. I see the only chance for the new Neonode N2 to get a US carrier deal quickly that wants to offer a smaller and hopefully cheaper alternative to the Apple iPhone.

HTC X7500 Viral Teasing before 3GSM 2007

Topic:

HTC X7500 Viral Teasing before 3GSM 2007 Technology News, Electronics Buy Guide and Gadget Review Looks like HTC is trying hard to promote their new HTC X7500 aka HTC Athena before they unveil it at the 3GSM 2007 conference.

We received a tip from David about the site seehtc.com where you see some teaser photos of the X7500 followed by a countdown timer that currently stands at 7 days.

msmobiles reports about a rather crapy viral marketing video that HTC put on Youtube. The short skid is about two guys stealing a HTC X7500 demo unit from the HTC offices in London. The only cool scene in this video is at the end when one guy is opening the X7500 and sticks it back together.

The only big issue with this whole marketing effort of HTC is that its partners like T-Mobile already announced the HTC Athena. T-Mobile releases it under the name Ameo in Europe.

New Neonode at the 3GSM 2007

Topic:

New Neonode at the 3GSM 2007 Technology News, Electronics Buy Guide and Gadget Review Neonode annouced a small touch screen phone already back in 2002. The Neonode N1 made it then finally onto the European market in November of 2004. As you know touch screen phones are all the hype now with the Apple iPhone and the Prada Phone.

Update:
Neonode N2 Announced

Now Swedish Neonode is apparently coming out with a new Neonode phone. At least this is what the homepage of the Neonode site is saying. They try to be funny with a pregnancy spiel, which does not resonate with me at all.
