AMD ATI 4800 Series Video Cards in iMac and Mac Pro Computers Technology News, Electronics Buy Guide and Gadget Review AMD has announced that its line of HD 4800 video cards is being used inside of some of Apple's iMac and Mac Pro computers. Apple has been using NVIDIA video cards and GPUs in many of its systems, but they GPUs have been failing in many of its computers.

AMD says that its GPUs complement Snow Leopard's fully OpenCL Verison 1.0 implementation. The specification is a key enabler of ATI Stream technology that allows developers to balance application workloads across the GPU and the CPU. Read more

NVIDIA Unveils Quadro FX 4800 Graphics Card for Mac Pro Technology News, Electronics Buy Guide and Gadget Review

Today NVIDIA announced the availability of their ultra high-end Quadro FX 4800 graphics card for Mac Pro users.

The card NVIDIA describes as “market’s most advanced professional graphics card” features similar specs as the recently-released PC version, including:

  • A “massive” 1.5GB frame buffer
  • Memory bandwidth up to 76.8 GB/sec
  • Boot camp support
  • Two dual-link DVI connectors equipped with 3 pin min-din connector for added “3D stereoscopic imaging” according to the release

NVIDIA GM of Professional Solutions, Jeff Brown, said in a statement, “Some of the world’s most challenging visual computing problems are solved on the Mac platform. The Quadro FX 4800 provides the power and speed to meet these demanding requirements.”

The new HD 4850 and HD 4870 were already revealed this week, when Diamond apparently unveiled their 4800 series card too early.

AMD says the ATI Radeon HD 4850 is the first TeraFLOPS graphics card available. Additionally the HD 4870 based cards feature GDDR5 memory. Read more

AMD's ATI will push out the ATI Radeon 4800 series apparently featuring some hardware physics engine.
The ATI Radeon will come as 4850, 4870, and 4870 X2. The 4870 slated for end of June actually sports DDR5 memory. The 4870 is supposed to have the same performance as a dual-GPU 3870 X2. Read more
