500GB Archos 5 Android Ships And New Firmware Supposed To Fix Issues
The Archos 5 Android Internet Tablet started shipping earlier this month. Back then only the 160GB and the 32GB Archos 5 Android players were available. Now the top of the line 500GB Archos 5 Android ships as well for $499.99 from Amazon.com.
Over the last days Archos 5 Android users reported issues with their device and Amazon actually stopped offering the 160GB model due to customer reports.

Toshiba Unveils 500GB 2.5-inch HDD
Toshiba has announced a new HDD called the MKXX56GSY that is available in 500GB capacity. The line now offers drives with 160GB, 250GB, and 320GB capacities as well. The 500GB drive has two platters and a maximum areal density of 395 Gb/in2.
The average seek time for the drive is 11ms and it spins at 7200 rpm. The interface is SATA 3Gb/s and the drive measures 69.85mm x 100mm x 9.5mm. 115g. The drive can withstand shocks of 325G while operating and 900G when not operating. Read more

Samsung Announces 500GB per Platter HDDs
Samsung has announced a new line of HDDs for servers and desktop PCs that have 500GB of storage per platter. The drives are aimed at high-end computing environments and are called the Spinpoint F3. The drive spins at 7200rpm.
The first F3 drive will be a 1TB drive needing only two platters to reach that capacity. In addition to high capacity the drives also have high-performance and low power consumption. Read more

Samsung unveiled a new high capacity Spinpoint M7 HDD for laptops. The new 500GB 2.5-inch hard disk drive features a shock operation tolerance of 400G/2ms.

Seagate Momentus 7200.4 500GB Hard Drive Review
Hard drive upgrades are easy enough to do on a notebook assuming you can install the operating system without any problems. Today we are looking at a new Seagate Momentus 7200.4 500GB HDD. The drive spins at 7200 rpm but consumes nearly the same power as a 5400 rpm drive.

Hitachi Delivers EcoTrac 500GB CinemaStar HDD
Hitachi announced a new hard drive today in its CinemaStar series that offers 500GB of storage space for video. The drive uses a compact 2.5-inch form factor and is designed for video storage uses that need low power drives and compact designs.
The drive spins at 5400 rpm and has capacities starting at 160GB and going up to the new 500GB drive. Hitachi's SmoothStream technology is integrated into the drive to enhance streaming of video and time-limited error recovery is integrated as well. Read more

Hitachi Ships Green 500GB Notebook HDD
Hitachi announced today new notebook hard drives that offer high capacity, encryption, and green power features. The 500GB Travelstar 5K500.B uses dual 250GB platters in a standard 9.5mm form factor. The drive has optional Bulk Data Encryption (BDE) for sensitive data.
The drive has the Hitachi EcoTrac classification due to the reduced wattage required to operate the drive, along with its halogen free design. The drive requires only 1.4W during read/write applications. Spin speed for the drive is 5400 RPM. An enhanced availability version of the drive will be offered called the E5K500.B. The normal drive will ship in December with the E5K500.B shipping by the end of Q1 2009. Read more

WD 500GB Notebook HDD Now Shipping
Western Digital has announced that its new Scorpio Blue 2.5-inch notebook HDD is now shipping in volume to OEMs. The drive offers up to 500Gb of storage and has 250GB of storage space per platter. The drive is also available in 400GB capacity.
Other features of the drive include a 3 Gb/s transfer rate and SATA connectivity. WD says that the Scorpio Blue is the highest capacity 2.5-inch 9mm thick drive to ship to date. The drive was developed for OEM use. The drive will retail for $219.99 for the 500GB and $189.99 for the 400GB. Read more

Seagate Annonces 1.5TB HDD for Desktop and 500GB for Notebooks
Seagate has announced the world’s highest capacity desktop hard drive at 1.5TB is capacity. The drive uses four platters to reach its capacity and Seagate says that this is the biggest increase in hard drive capacity in 50 years.
It has been about a year since Seagate launched its 1TB hard drive. The drive is called the Barracuda 7200.11 and spins at 7200 rpm. Seagate has also announced new notebook hard drives that both have a 500GB storage capacity. One of the notebook drives comes in 5400 rpm and the other is 7200 rpm, both have the same 500GB capacity. The drives will be available in Q4 2008 at undisclosed pricing. The 1.5TB drive also features the option of bulk data encryption with AES encryption. Read more

Verbatim Announces 500GB Portable HDD
Verbatim announced this week that it was adding a 500GB version is its 2.5-inch SmartDisk portable hard drive to the lineup. According to Verbatim this is the world’s first 500GB portable hard drive featuring a 9.5mm Z-height drive.
The drive is about the size of a PDA and joins the SmartDisk like that already has capacities of 120GB to 320GB available. The drive promises a weight of under 6 ounces and measures 3.38” x 5.38” x 0.63” and will be available with either a USB interface or with a USB/Firewire interface. Read more

Samsung Ships 500GB Spinpoint Notebook Hard Drive
Samsung announced today that it is now shipping its 500GB Spinpoint M6 notebook hard drive. The drive uses three platters that each have 167GB of storage space. The rotational speed is 5400 RPM and the drive is 9.5mm thick.
"Our customers require more and more notebook storage for their data, video and music files", said Andy Higginbotham, director of hard drive sales and marketing, Samsung Semiconductor. "Our Spinpoint M6 easily fits within notebook PCs with no modification to the notebook PC chassis, giving users more storage power than ever before." Read more

Fujitsu Unveils 500GB 2.5-inch Notebook Hard Drive
Fujitsu announced a breakthrough in notebook hard drives today with a 500Gb 2.5-inch notebook drive. The MHZ2 BT drive spins at 4200 rpm and consumes only 1.8W of power. Fujitsu says the drive is intended for notebook computers, DVRs and external hard drive applications.
"With the expansion of HD digital broadcasts and Internet-based video distribution, there is an increasing need for high-capacity hard disk drives that can handle large volume data storage in portable devices," said Lorne Wilson, senior vice president, sales and marketing, Fujitsu Computer Products of America, Inc. "Fujitsu will continue to focus on developing high-capacity and reliable 2.5" HDDs that will further enhance its product offerings in the IT and consumer electronics markets." Read more
