Microsoft: AMOLED Displays Are The Future
Okay, so Microsoft didn't actually say that outright. Actions speak louder than words though, and Microsoft's actions with Windows Phone 7 speak to high hopes for the future ubiquity of OLED-based displays. PocketNow reports that Windows Phone 7 engineers chose black and white backgrounds for a very specific reason.
Black backgrounds draw less power on an AMOLED screen, and white backgrounds work better for emails and improve text readability. Microsoft knows that OLED/AMOLED technology will be the future of phone displays. It has already started to gain quite a bit of popularity, and that will only continue over the next few years.

iPhone 2010 Super AMOLED Display Rumors Heat Up
RUMORS! HEARSAY! SPECULATION! Yes, this article has it all. In my interview with Aaron Vronko we touched briefly on the possibility that the new iPhone would pack a Super AMOLED screen. This new display technology (developed by Samsung) would give Apple a head's up on their plain-old AMOLED-packing competitors, like the Nexus One.
Now articles have popped up on Gadget Venue and PMP Today discussing rumors of a Super AMOLED screen for the new iPhone. I traced the rumors back to their source at OLED display.net, who claims to have heard from OLED industry sources that Apple is very interested in Samsung's technology.

Samsung Makes AMOLED With Built-In Touchscreen
Samsung has made a major breakthrough in OLED technology. Electronista reports that the company has just announced that it can now mass-produce the world's first active matrix OLED screens with built-in touch functions. Normally, touch is added to an OLED/AMOLED screen by putting a second touch input layer on top of the original screen. This obscures the image somewhat, dimming it a bit and stopping users from getting a perfect picture.
Now Samsung knows how to add touch sensors to each of the organic cells in the AMOLED screen. It adds a tiny amount of thickness to the screen, but does not require a second layer equipped with sensors in order to work. The first 3.3" screens to make use of this technology should be in full production by March. Impressive!

Cowon J3: A 3.3'' AMOLED PMP?
Some day soon, OLED screens will be the standard. Every device that launches will pack one and there will be nothing at all exciting about its inclusion in a gadget. Today, though, OLED is still novel enough to make otherwise pedestrian products seem exciting. Take the Cowon J3 (Player Bites). This PMP is said to feature a 3.3" AMOLED screen, WiFi, 4/8/15 GB storage capacities, and an in-built DMB tuner.

myGOtv with 3.4-inch AMOLED Screen Debuts
I can see the appeal of a portable TV when you are out on the go. You could watch TV while riding the bus or train to work each day or when sitting waiting for an appointment you could watch some TV. I'm not sure that a dedicated device is the way most of us would prefer to watch TV; I would rather see it integrated into my iPhone.
Still, if a dedicated portable TV device floats your boat the 3.4-inch AMOLED Pocket digital TV model DHT234D from MyGoTV is debuting at CES this week. The device has an AMOLED display and can play for 2.5 hours continuously. The set picks up free OTA DTYV signals and NTSC RF channels 2-69. It has a monopole DTV antenna built-in and supports a resolution of 480 x 272. Read more

The HTC Legend: Budget Android AMOLED Smartphone
Once of the smartphones leaked in HTC's 2010 line-up was the Legend. While most follow-up coverage has focused on the Bravo and the HTC Passion (aka Nexus One), we're now starting to learn a little more about the other phones on that list. The Legend doesn't have quite as much flash or flair as the Bravo or Passion but if the ai.rs blog is correct (via Android and Me) it's still going to be a hot budget device.

The Sony Ericsson Kurara: 720p Recording+AMOLED screen=Hot
I'm currently in a committed relationship with my Android smartphone, but that doesn't mean I have to stop looking at other devices. Some of them I might even want to oggle lecherously while sweating and mumbling under my breath. That might make me sound like a bit of a freak, but the Ericsson Kurara really does look that hot.
This new smartphone was leaked out on an Ericsson fan forum and brought into the English-speaking blogosphere by Boy Genius. As best we can tell, the Kurara is an S60-running smartphone with an 8.1 MP camera, like the Rachel. Unlike the Rachel, the Kurara's camera is supposed to be able to record in 720p HD. The Kurara is also rumored to pack an AMOLED screen, although that's impossible to confirm with the photos we have.

Samsung Rogue SCH-U960 AMOLED Phone Review
Our review partner Digital Trends tested the Samsung Rogue SCH-U960 touchscreen phone available on Verizon Wireless. Is the OLED screen the only highlight?
Quote from the review: "Of the plethora of cellular handsets that manufacturer Samsung is releasing this fall, the Rogue is one of the few that offers a brilliant AMOLED touchscreen display. While it isn’t a smartphone by traditional definitions, shoppers shouldn’t be overly worried, though.

OLED-Info published an interview with OLED reseller Densitron. Densitron says that they hope to begin selling 7" AMOLED panels, by the end of August.

World's Thinnest AMOLED Display by Samsung
Samsung SDI shows a 2.2 inch AMOLED display which is only .52mm thin.
AMOLED stands for Active-Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode. 0.52mm is about as thin as a business card. Pretty cool - nearly as cool as the new Sony flexible OLED display.
The ultra-thin 2.2 inch AMOLED display has a QVGA resolution and seems to be very bright. Samsung SDI also showed other AMOLED displays with different resolutions like 400x240px at the SID 2007.

Super Thin Samsung AMOLED Display Makes Paris Hilton Look Fat
Criminy, if this Samsung 17” AMOLED display was a runway model it would be force fed Ben & Jerry’s till it bulked up a bit. This thing is super thin at 1.8mm for the screen and the entire TV is a mere 12mm thick.
In addition to being thin, the display has some great stats. PC Gamers try this on for size, the response time is around 0.01ms and viewing angles are greater than 170 degrees. The display itself is so thin it looks as though the display stand will need to go on a diet. Read more
