NTT DOCOMO and AT&T Inc. extend 3G Network throughout Hawaii

What was announced in 2007 is now finished. NTT DoCoMo and AT&T announced today that the extension of a third-generation (3G) mobile network to all principal islands in the U.S. state of Hawaii has been completed.

Using AT&T's 3G network, which is based on W-CDMA technology, DOCOMO customers now have access to data and voice roaming services in the main populated areas of Oahu, Hawaii, Maui, Lanai, Molokai, and Kauai.

NTT DOCOMO began providing 3G roaming services on Oahu in October 2007 and then extended the services to other islands including Hawaii and Maui islands as the network was expanded. Read more

AT&T iPhone 3G Sales double that of iPhone

AT&T said during their earnings call that the new iPhone 3G sold twice as many units in the first 12 days compared to the first generation iPhone a year ago.

AT&T had quite a good quarter not even including the iPhone 3G. AT&T's profit rose by 30% to $3.77 billion. Read more

AT&T announces free Wi-Fi for iPhones again by Mistake

In May we reported that AT&T informed on their site that they would allow iPhone to use their 17,000 Wi-fi hotspots for free. The next day AT&T removed that announcement.

AT&T and EA Bring Spore to Mobile Users

AT&T and EA are offering exclusive content from Spore to AT&T mobile and Internet customers. The exclusive content will include Spore Origins, a game designed exclusively for mobile phones and only available on AT&T handsets until September 4th.

New AT&T high speed Internet customers will also get a free download version of Spore and a free download of the Spore creature Creator. The full Spore game hits stores in America on September 7th for the PC and Mac. Read more

AT&T Lays Claim to Nation’s Fastest 3G Network

AT&T is claiming that it has the fastest nationwide 3G network. I’m sure this claim is a way to help entice shoppers to buy the iPhone 3G that launched today. AT&T says that it bases the claim on a variety of tests conducted by third-party researchers and that AT&T had the fastest network by a significant margin.

AT&T says that it has 3G service in 300 cities and expects to expand the service to 350 cities by the end of the year. The catch with that is my city is one of the 3G “covered” areas and the service is so patchy as to be pretty much useless. I can’t even get 3G in my home, but drive a mile down the road and you can get a weak signal. Read more

AT&T lets you keep old iPhone to use as iPod touch

This is kind of obvious but still worth to keep in mind. AT&T will let you do with your old iPhone after upgrading to your new iPhone 3G what ever you want.
You can hand it down to a family member or just have it deactivated and use it basically as an iPod touch.

After deactivation the Wi-fi and media player features still work. Read more

AT&T releases iPhone 3G Pricing and Launch Details

AT&T announced the pricing and launch details for the iPhone 3G today

As already announced at the WWDC 08, the iPhone 3G will be available for $199 for the 8GB model and $299 for the 16GB model. These prices require two-year contracts and are available to the following customers:
- iPhone customers who purchased before July 11th
- Customers activating a new line with AT&T

AT&T Says Anyone Can Upgrade to the iPhone 3G

I just had a nice chat with Mark Siegel, AT&T Mobility Executive Director-Media relations about the new iPhone 3G. Mr. Siegel tells me that current iPhone customers and any other AT&T customer that is currently under a contract will be able to upgrade to the new iPhone 3G simply by agreeing to a new 2-year agreement and pay the $199 or $299 price for the device. Update: iPhone 3G is Official, Now What AT&T?

Update: AT&T has circulated its press release confirming the iPhone 3G price and launch date. There is no mention of discounts and the release says that the phones will go for full retail price with a 2-year contract required for all purchases.

So there it is the 8Gb iPhone will go for $199 and the 16Gb for $299. The only piece of the puzzle left for those of us here in the US is what exactly AT&T will do. At $199 for an outright purchase and Apple now reported to be allowing the phone company to keep more of the monthly charges to allow for subsidies we could see the iPhone for new customers at $50 to $99.

That said knowing how AT&T operates I would not be surprised in the least to see AT&T not offer any discounts on the device at all. If they want folks other than technophiles to buy the iPhone 3G they had better do something. Read more

AT&T seeks to hire Greeters for 3G iPhone Launch?

AT&T is hiring temps for greeter jobs for a project called "Summer Project Pro".

AT&T did the same hiring last year at the Apple iPhone launch. It is almost certain that AT&T is now hiring the greeters for the 3G iPhone launch.
The job description says that the assignment starts at June 16th and goes through August 16th. Read more

AT&T Says American Idol Season 7 Broke Text Message Record

AT&T announced today that the latest season of American Idol generated more than 78 million text messages as watchers voted for their favorite contestants. AT&T introduced the ability to text votes in season 2 of the show.

AT&T polled 416 users to see what roll text messaging played in the shot and found that 51% of respondents say they text more frequently during the Idol season than other times. 43% say they talk about the show via text messages and 22% say that they first learned to text by voting for singers on the show. AT&T to finish 3G Network and first to fully deploy HSDPA and HSUPA

AT&T will be the first in the U.S. to fully deploy HSPA technology in its wireless network, giving customers unsurpassed speeds of up to 1.4 Mbps (Down), 800 Kbps (Up).
Today AT&T announced that, in the next month, the company will deploy High Speed Uplink Packet Access (HSUPA) technology in the six remaining markets across AT&T's entire 3G (third-generation) wireless broadband network. When done, AT&T will have completed its deployment of HSUPA technology, which complements existing HSDPA technology (High Speed Downlink Packet Access), making AT&T the only U.S. carrier to have fully deployed HSPA technology in its 3G network. AT&T still has enough iPhones

As reported the iPhone is not available anymore on the online Apple store. AT&T has restricted iPhone sales briefly to one iPhone per customer this week. Since Thursday the restriction has ended again and is back to the normal 3 iPhones per customer limit.

AT&T wanted to make sure everyone who wanted an iPhone gets one, but I guess they figured quickly that demand is not that high right now and they should be happy if a customer walks in and wants to buy 3 iPhones. Read more

AT&T iPhone gets access to 17,000 Wi-Fi Hotspots

AT&T has not officially announced that it will give access to 17,000 Wi-Fi hotspots to iPhone users, but the descriptions of the iPhone plans have been updated with this information on their site.

AT&T recently struck a deal with Starbucks to provide hotspots at their coffee houses. The iPhone plans still have the same pricing starting at $59.99. Read more
