T-Mobile G1 Android Phone is I4U Gift Guide Tip #92
The first Google Android smartphone, the T-Mobile G1 completes our Top 10 Mobile Phone Gift Guide 2008. I have hesitated a bit to recommend the HTC G1 as a gift as Android is rather early stage and you could call the G1 a project. On the other hand it is one of the few things you can get in on at the ground level. It is new and promising as the Adobe Flash Player 10 running on Android showed impressively today.
The T-Mobile G1 is a great gift for early adopters, open source fans and Google fans.

Video of Adobe Flash 10 running on Android T-Mobile G1 Google Phone
Adobe showed at the Adobe MAX 2008 developer conference Flash 10 running on Android. See a video of full flash running on the T-Mobile G1 below.
The Apple iPhone might never get Adobe Flash because it would impact Apple's software control over the iPhone. See this new Wired article about this topic. This is a real disadvantage for the iPhone as Flash is very popular on the web especially for video playback and online games.

T-Mobile G1 Android Apps available on Handango
There is the Android Market, but there are also other App stores now offering applications for the Android smartphones like Handango.
Unlike the iPhone where Apple has everything under their control, the Android eco system is a bit more open. Tetris from EA Mobile for the G1 sells for instance for $7.99.
The Google operated Android Market has about 170 apps right now. Handango offers 41 apps for the G1 right now.

The Google pushed Android mobile phone platform is getting broad support from mobile phone makers. Now Asus is also working on an Android phone to be released in the first half of 2009.
Asus recently introduced the Asus P552w Glide touch-screen smartphone. This Windows smartphone is already a decent attempt by Asus to make some noise in the smartphone sector.

Motorola says Jha to Android, Simpler Designs and Job Cuts
The WSJ has a piece on the new Motorola co-chief executive Sanjay Jha and his pursuit of making the Motorola mobile unit successful again.
Mr. Jha's plan includes focusing on Android phones, and two other software platforms. He needs to cancel four others Motorola has supported so far. This will lead to scrap dozens of cell phone designs that are currently under development leading to many delays for those who actually still wait for Moto phones.

Motorola Android Phone rumored for Q2 2009 Release
The T-Mobile G1 is the first Google Android phone, but that doesn't mean that there will be plenty more in 2009. BusinessWeek reports about Motorola's efforts to release an Android smartphone in 2009. With the rumored Q2 release Motorola will most likely be rather late with their Android phone.
Motorola has apparently been showing specification sheets and images of the Android phone to carriers over the last 2 months (c'mon! Somebody leak it already).

HTC Touch HD rumored to be next Android Phone T-Mobile G2
The HTC Touch HD has many, including me, already excited as it features this amazing 3.8 inch screen with 800x480px resolution. A rumor sprung up that HTC is working to bring Android onto the HTC Touch HD.
Android fans already named the rumored phone T-Mobile G2. For early adopters the HTC Touch HD would be a boon, as it outperforms the iPhone 3G in all dimensions. Besides the screen the HTC Touch HD features a 5MP camera, 2nd VGA camera, GPS, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi.

T-Mobile G1 Android Phone already sold 1.5 million Units?
We already reported that pre-orders for the first Android smartphone are very strong. Now Fool.com puts a number on how well the T-Mobile G1 pre-orders are actually going. If the number is correct, early adopters already ordered 1.5 million T-Mobile G1 phones. It looks like the Google controlled Open Source Phone is off to a great start.
I am still not convinced that the T-Mobile G1 is ready for the mainstream smart phone user. Sales could drop as quickly as the downloads did for the Google Chrome browser.

PAC-MAN Available for Android G1 Device
PAC-MAN was one of the early arcade games that helped spawned gaming. The game was simple with a little yellow cheese wheel, some floating ghosts, and mazes. The game proved popular and was one of the titles that drove gamers to the Atari console and even spawned its own cartoon show.
Namco has announced that the game is available for the new Android powered G1 smartphone from T-Mobile. The best news is that you don’t have to raid your piggy bank for quarters. On the G1, the game has three control methods: swipe mode with control by swiping a finger, track mode using the track ball and accelerometer mode controlled by moving the phone. The game retails for $9.99. Read more

Google Android Phone T-Mobile G1 to be priced at $199
As reported the first Android Mobile phone will be unveiled at an event on the 23rd by T-Mobile. The Wall Street Journal reports that their sources tell them that the first Android powered smart phone G1 would sell for $199.
The price is a pretty safe guess since the iPhone 3G sells for the same price and there is no way the Google phone can be more expensive if it wants to have a chance.

Android Market to take on iPhone App Store
It was clear that the Google Android platform would see some kind of platform to offer applications from developers to Android users. The Android team revealed some early details of the Android Market yesterday.
The Android Market is an open content distribution system that will help end users find, purchase, download and install various types of content on their Android-powered devices.
Developers will be able to make their content available on an open service hosted by Google that features a feedback and rating system similar to YouTube. Google chose the term "market" rather than "store" because they feel that developers should have an open and unobstructed environment to make their content available. I think they chose market so they do not sound like a copycat of the Apple iTunes App Store.

New Android 0.9 SDK beta released
Google announces the new Android 0.9 SDK beta. The new Android beta SDK that Google has released is the first big step on the SDK's road to compatibility with 1.0.
Since this is a beta release, applications developed with it may not quite be compatible with devices running the final Android 1.0. However, the APIs are now pretty stable and we don't expect any major changes.
