Sprint Announces Least Awful Quarter In Years
Apparently, the Pre has helped Sprint's bottom line. The company posted its Q3 numbers today, and its losses were lower than they have been in years. They had a net revenue of $8 billion, with losses of "only" $478 million.
For most companies, posting half a billion dollars in losses isn't something to celebrate. Yes, things at Sprint really have been that bad. They lost another 135,000 subscribers this quarter, which at least represented a 20% reduction in subscriber losses over their last quarter. Things are getting better for the ailing carrier, but they're far from out of the woods yet. Sprint is still hemmoraging money and subscribers. The fact that they're doing it less now than they were at the start of the year is hard to get excited about.

AT&T Shows Quarterly Decline Thanks to iPhone 3GS
Despite record-breaking iPhone sales and a huge increase in their number of subscribers, AT&T's revenue is down from $3.8 billion to $3.2 billion this quarter. The launch of the iPhone 3GS was the carrier's biggest sales day in history and this quarter saw a gain of 1.4 million subscribers. This has been a great quarter for ATT...so why is revenue down?
As it turns out, the iPhone is to blame for that as well. AT&T has to subsidize every iPhone sold in order to keep costs down. This means that actual iPhone sales lose them money. Of course, that doesn't mean the iPhone is hurting AT&T. A little bit of a loss now is a fair price to pay for the overall profits they're going to rake in over the next couple of years.

Microsoft to Ship Windows 7 Starter Edition Globally
Microsoft has announced that it will ship Windows 7 Starter Edition globally. Starter editions of Windows have been offered for both Vista and XP, though they were not available in the US previously. One big caveats with previous started editions is that there was a three simultaneous application limit.
Microsoft has announced that in addition to shipping Windows 7 Starter globally it has also removed the three application limit. This is a clear attempt by Microsoft to get XP out of the market and have netbook makers adopt Windows 7. Read more
