IDC Says Market for sub-$500 Notebooks will be Biggest in Developed Countries
According to IDC ultra low cost notebooks have received considerable attention as a possible solution to the so called digital divide in developing countries. Despite that fact IDC says that these sub-$500 clamshell mobile PCs with screens of 7-10 inches will find success as secondary computing devices in established regions and educational markets.
"Consumers have embraced the idea of the PC, particularly the portable PC, as a personal device rather than a shared household device," said Bob O'Donnell, vice president, Clients and Displays at IDC. "This has led to the introduction of notebooks in an increasingly wide range of sizes and shapes, as well as more specialized PCs. Very low-cost, compact notebooks than can be carried around and provide quick and easy access to the Internet via Wi-Fi hot spots fills an important spot in this burgeoning market - the first disposable notebooks." Biggest Digital Buzz was InfoBadge at CES 2003
Tom Crofford, President Sunova Corporation, explains what the InfoBadge is in our exclusive audio interview from the show floor.
I first saw Jason Ivan, Director of Product Marketing for M-Audio’s Consumer Audio
Division, wearing the InfoBadge (NOW:
$56) at Pat Meier-Johnson's Lunch@Piero's
press luncheon. Jason purchased the digital name badge because "it
just looked so cool." He said the gadget badge attracted thingamajig
minded attendees
like a magnet. It worked on me. When it first caught my eye, without hesitation,
I immediately walked up to Jason to find out about the droolcool digital
e-wear doodad. After a five minute discussion, I wanted to know about M-Audio products. Hear our interview.
The InfoBadge stores 118 characters, runs for 16+ hours
on a single watch-sized battery, has seven scroll modes and is
programmable through a serial infrared interface module.
A Beach Boy fan close to the stage shares the Hard Rock Casino concert
via his cell phone.
I also saw several audience members wearing the
scrolling badge during the Fellowes Beach
Boy concert. If you want to attract attention in a large social
group (trade show, rock concert, singles bar) the InfoBadge is a cheap,
cool vehicle that will do the trick.
