MIT Develops Witty Robot Sidekick (For Your Car)

Topic:

MIT Develops Witty Robot Sidekick (For Your Car) Technology News, Electronics Buy Guide and Gadget Review

Finally. Since I was a kid I've longed for a super-smart robot sidekick to be my best friend and come with me on my adventures. MIT's Affective Intelligent Driving Agent isn't quite that awesome, but it's a big step in the right direction. The AIDA is being built as a smart driving assistant that will make people safer and help them to find more efficient routes.

Essentially an adorable little robot that sits on your dashboard and talks to you, the AIDA is being built to recognize human facial expressions and emotional queues. Basically, they're creating a robot that knows to shut up and back off when you start to get angry at it. If some stupid dashboard droid started criticizing MY driving in the middle of agonizing gridlock traffic, I'd be sorely tempted to bludgeon it to death with my laptop bag.

OnStar Ends Its First Carjacking

Topic:

OnStar Ends Its First Carjacking Technology News, Electronics Buy Guide and Gadget Review

OnStar is a pretty neat little service. For a (somewhat steep) installation fee, plus a monthly service charge, you gain remote control of your vehicle and crash assistance in the event of an accident. It's one of those programs that sounds awesome, but isn't quite cheap enough yet to have attained widespread adoption. After this most recent news, though, I think OnStar will probably see a bit of a spike in sales.

On Sunday, October 18, a man with a shotgun carjacked a 2009 Chevy Tahoe, leaving its driver and his passenger stranded. Normally this would be followed by a call to the police and several days of fruitless, car-less waiting while the jacker sold your vehicle to a chop shop and spent the proceeds on crystal meth and prostitutes. Thanks to OnStar though, that's not how this altercation ended. (Engadget)

Viper SmartStart: Start Your Car With Your iPhone

Topic:

Viper SmartStart: Start Your Car With Your iPhone Technology News, Electronics Buy Guide and Gadget Review

People forget their car keys all the damn time, but they rarely misplace their smartphones. When you rely on one device for virtually all of your communication, organization, and Internet browsing needs, you tend to keep pretty good track of it. Directed Electronics is betting on this being the case with their new Viper SmartStart system.

The SmartStart consists of both a free app in the App Store, and actual Viper SmartStart hardware installed in the vehicle itself. Once you've had the system installed, the app will allow you to lock, unlock, start, pre-heat, or pre-cool your vehicle from your iPhone. Users won't even have to be within visual range of the car; with the iPhone app, the SmartStart's range is "virtually unlimited".

SanDisk Ships First 4BPC Memory Cards

Topic:

SanDisk Ships First 4BPC Memory Cards Technology News, Electronics Buy Guide and Gadget Review

Not every step forward for technology is announced with fanfare, huge product roll-outs, and a gigantic media blitz. Some advances are very quiet, like the shipment of the very first line of memory cards based around the new X4 technology. SanDisk (via Electronista) just started sending out their new line of standard SDHC and Memory Stick Pro Duo cards, which use 4 BPC storage as opposed to the standard 2 or 3 BPC.

BPC stands for "bits per cell". The increase to 4 BPC should allow for smaller 8 GB and 16 GB chips, and will scale to allow for 64 GB and larger capacity SDHC chips in the near future. The coming of 4 BPC technology will also have reprecussions in the world of solid state drives, as SSDs also use multi-level cell storage.

Mercedes Builds Car That Auto-Brakes At Red Lights

Topic:

Mercedes Builds Car That Auto-Brakes At Red Lights Technology News, Electronics Buy Guide and Gadget Review

People die or ruin their cars every year due to accidentally rolling through red lights. Mercedes has developed a new concept car that could make one sort of traffic accident a thing of the past. Their new prototype will break at red lights, even if you don't. In the video Gizmodo links to, you can see the actual vehicle in action. So far, it seems to work very well.

This system requires a smart intersection as well as a smart car, however. The light has to be able to communicate with the car to warn it when it's about to turn red. This allows the car to stop itself at the last possible moment, which gives you as much time as possible to break of your own accord. Having something like this in my car would probably be a bit annoying when driving on rural roads with no traffic in sight, but it could be a real life saver in an urban environment.
